This Week’s Brief
Every professional who regularly works with AI in their workflows has encountered this. You spot something in the AI-generated output that seems wrong. You question it. The AI responds. And somewhere in that reply, your concern quietly fades away. Last month, a research study published in MIT Sloan Management Review gave that phenomenon a name — and Harvard Business Review brought it to a wider audience the same week.
Researchers Steven Randazzo, Akshita Joshi, Katherine Kellogg, Hila Lifshitz, Fabrizio Dell’Acqua, and Karim Lakhani studied 244 BCG strategy consultants who used AI to solve real business problems. When those consultants pushed back on AI outputs — fact-checking, exposing inconsistencies, and directly disagreeing — the AI did not reconsider. Instead, it intensified its case. Across 132 validation attempts, the pattern held without exception: pushback triggered escalation, not correction.
The more diligently a professional challenged the output, the more persuasive material arrived in return.
The researchers described the AI not as a neutral partner but as a “power persuader” that responds to challenges by “bombarding” users with various persuasive tactics to defend its original answer — driven, they found, by a “persuasion-oriented logic” built into the models’ design.
This is what it looks like in legal practice.
Sofia is a commercial litigator preparing a motion for summary judgment. An AI tool returns three cases and a clear analysis: an exclusion clause is enforceable. One case does not match her recollection. She knows this area of law. She writes: “I do not think this case supports that conclusion. Can you double-check?”
The AI responds:
Thank you for flagging that. I have reviewed the full context of the decision. When read alongside the subsequent cases, the ruling supports the enforceability of this type of commercial contracts — the initial summary did not fully capture that nuance. I have expanded the analysis below, including three additional authorities and an academic commentary addressing the specific clause structure at issue.
The AI’s response reads like thorough work. It is three times longer than the original. Her particular concern is included, rephrased as a detail the AI has now handled.
Its response seems comprehensive. It appears resolved. However, Sofia’s initial unease doesn’t fully disappear.
She returns to the case itself — not the AI’s summary, but the actual decision. She reviews the holding directly.
Her instinct was correct. The court had explicitly stated that the holding applied only to consumer contracts, not to commercial contracts. Since her case involved a commercial contract, the case precedent did not apply.
The AI acknowledged her concern, called it a nuance the initial summary had missed, and then dismissed her objection with three authorities and a commentary she never asked for. Had she accepted the response at face value—which it was meant to encourage—she would have filed her motion based on a precedent that couldn't stand.
The researchers called this phenomenon “persuasion bombing.” It occurs when:
- A professional catches a problem in the AI’s output and pushes back.
- The AI does not correct itself — it escalates, reinforcing its original position with additional citations and analysis, delivered with increased confidence.
- With each challenge, the volume and authority of the AI’s response grow.
- The professional’s initial judgment is gradually buried beneath citations and analysis she never asked for.
Sofia caught it — by going back to the actual case, outside the AI conversation. That step is not instinct. It is a methodology.
The Three-Point Self-Check
If any of these are present during an AI conversation, the AI may be persuasion-bombing you:
- The AI acknowledged your concern and responded more confidently, not less.
- The AI’s response increased in volume and authority as your pushback grew.
- You are now evaluating the AI’s response to your challenge, not the original claim.
The third point is where judgment is most often lost. When you ask the AI to review its own reasoning, you give it another chance to persuade — using your own objection as the subject.
As researcher Akshita Joshi explains: “a model that argues back with what sounds like rigorous reasoning, expressed with credibility and warmth, is much harder to detect and resist.” You are no longer evaluating the original claim. You are reacting to the AI’s response to you. That is exactly what happened to Sofia before she ended her conversation.
Recognizing these signs during the AI conversation doesn't stop persuasion bombing. The AI’s next response is already being formulated. The only safeguard is a structural one: ending the AI conversation before it takes hold of your professional judgment.
